Olympus E-M5II with Pixel Shift can shoot 40MP pictures with 16MP Sensor

Perhaps you are a fan of mirrorless cameras, then you can consider Olympus E-M5II (E-M5 Mark II) with the Micro Four Thirds (MFT) image sensor. The E-M5II is the successor of the Olympus E-M5 and rumored to feature a sensor shift mechanism allowing users to capture 40-megapixel photos. The Pixel Shift mechanism makes it possible to capture 40MP images using the 16MP sensor inside the E-M5II by shifting the sensor and combining up to 8 shots into one. This is similar to HDR technology which has often be found in other cameras.

The Pixel Shift mechanism found in some Hasselblad cameras, such as the H5D-200c. There are many people said that Hasselblad’s 200MP H5D-200c as a Multi-Shot beast, which was capable of shifting the sensor in 1/ 2 or 1-pixel increments and combining six shots into one. Just like you create HDR images from multiple shots you can create a high-resolution image. This feature should make m43 sensor in Olympus capable of huge increase in resolution for stationary subjects. However, Hasselblad is an enormously expensive device, while the Olympus one might arrive on the market with a price tag that won’t keep most customers at bay.

The Olympus E-M5II or the E-M5 Mark II shooter will have the same E-M5 16-megapixel sensor without PDAF and the same 5-axis image stabilization system and proven dust-proof and splash-proof technology used on the E-M5. 

Therefore, the E-M5II camera design will be a little bit different from the current Olympus OM-D E-M5 shooter. The Olympus E-M5II will use the same E-M5 16 megapixel sensor without PDAF and not the E-M1 sensor with PDAF.
